Abstract

23rd century, a mining asteroid: live, work, die in The Expanse: ICARUS was a sci-fi larp that took place in a real abandoned mine. ICARUS had two runs, the first in Italian, the second one in English. It gathered players from more than 20 countries, from China to Canada. This blockbuster larp aim was to create the “realistic” experience of living in a space station, with a massive use of technology, props, and scenography (and even an artificial night/day cycle). Some keywords: pre-generated characters. Dramatist approach. Minimal ruleset, no skills no points. Some numbers: 15+ computers, 400m of ethernet cable, 7 routers, 116 costumes, 8 interactive labs, 40 RFID keys to open electronic locks, 1 spaceship equipped with the Artemis videogame, 3 separate sectors of the station joined together by a timed shuttle. ICARUS has been our most ambitious project so far, involving more than 60 volunteers, some of whom worked for several months to bring this larp to life.
