Abstract

“OLTRE - la morte è l’unica libertà” (BEYOND - Death is the Only Freedom) was a post-apocalyptic larp about the meeting of two groups of characters typical of dystopian SF: a gang of raiders from the wasteland and a team of officials from a totalitarian city-state run by an artificial intelligence. The larp took place in an abandoned brick factory in the Novara countryside (not far from Milan). The game explored the tensions between anarchy and social control. OLTRE featured several solutions deemed to be quite innovative in the Italian larp scene, including a custom-made app for smartphones and tablets that allowed citizens to communicate with each other and with the Artificial Intelligence NPC; an abundance of in-game vehicles, including a flatbed truck, a three-wheeled light pickup van, and several bicycles; players used all those to roam the 400 meters-wide game area; and a Thunderdome-style arena for barehanded fights.
