Abstract

The Darkest Hour is a larp for 120 players, divided into 3 acts that lasted for a weekend. The event was set in the historical castle of Sannazzaro (close to Turin). The story took place in the fictional city of Gravesand in Victorian England (1873). The setting was inspired by classical Victorian horror stories whose atmospheres and protagonists were framed into a common background. Some steampunk notes were included to keep the event lighter and dreamier. As an example, during the event, a real hot air balloon carried the players up to 30 meters, providing them with a unique view of the location. In order to make the fear of death realistic and constant, characters could die from minute one of the game. Once dead, a character was guided into a parallel game as a ghost that could access unique locations and NPCs as well as partially interact with the living characters. This condition was studied to last only a few hours.
